49th annual Walk for Haiti will be held March 29

Faith and Concern Inc. will host once again the annual Walk for Haiti, which will take place on Good Friday, March 29 from 9-11 a.m. at the Peter Torigian Senior Center at 79 Central St. Walkers may come to the outdoor track at any time and walk as many laps as they wish, or stay inside and chat with Faith and Concern Board members, if more convenient.

Faith and Concern, which originated in Peabody 49 years ago, is a small ecumenical organization chartered as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation that seeks to find ways to respond to poverty and distress in Haiti. Before the pandemic, 80% of Haitians were living below the poverty level and only 50% of children were able to attend elementary school. However, today the conditions are even worse. The capital Port-au-Prince has become very dangerous, where even students are being killed by street gangs.

Faith and Concern said the back-country school supported by Faith and Concern is functioning and that, when it comes to schools and hospitals, nonprofit organizations are keeping Haiti going. The director of the school said simply, “We are a light in a very dark place”. It has been our intention for 49 years to help people rebuild where they live. Education is crucial for breaking the cycle of poverty. In addition to conducting classes, teachers also provide breakfast to the most needy children. One hundred percent of every dollar received goes to known trusted leaders in Haiti.
