Ring in the New Year at the library

The library is welcoming 2023 with a slate of activities and programs for patrons of all ages and is also launching a new  state-wide online networking group.

On Wednesday, Jan. 4, authors Maureen Johnson and Jennifer Lynn Barnes, two of the country’s top young adult authors will present a one-hour Zoom webinar entitled Author Maureen Johnson (Nine Liars) in conversation with Jennifer Lynn Barnes (The Gambit). The webinar begins at 7 p.m.

Johnson is the #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of more than a dozen young adult novels, including the “Truly Devious” series, the “Shades of London” series, “Suite Scarlett” and “13 Little Blue Envelopes.” Her collaborative books include “Ghosts of the Shadow Market” (with Cassandra Clare) as well as “Let It Snow” (with John Green and Lauren Myracle), which was also a hit feature film on Netflix.

A resident of New York City, Johnson’s books have sold more than three million copies worldwide and have been published in more than 30 countries. She grew up in Philadelphia, graduated from the University of Delaware and has an MFA in Writing from Columbia University.

Barnes is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of more than 20 acclaimed young adult novels, including “The Inheritance Games” trilogy, “Little White Lies,” “Deadly Little Scandals,” “The Lovely and the Lost” and “The Naturals” series.

A Fulbright Scholar with advanced degrees in psychology, psychiatry and cognitive science, Barnes received her Ph.D. from Yale University in 2012 and was a professor of psychology and professional writing for many years.

About “Nine Liars”: Senior year at Ellingham Academy for Stevie Bell isn’t going well. Her boyfriend, David, is studying in London. Her friends are obsessed with college applications. With the cold case of the century solved, Stevie is adrift. There is nothing to distract her from the questions pinging around her brain — questions about college, love, and life in general. Relief comes when David invites Stevie and her friends to join him for study abroad, and his new friend Izzy introduces her to a double-murder cold case. In 1995, nine friends from Cambridge University went to a country house and played a drunken game of hide-and-seek. Two were found in the woodshed the next day, murdered with an ax. The case was assumed to be a burglary gone wrong, but one of the remaining seven saw something she can’t explain. This was no break-in. Someone’s lying about what happened in the woodshed. Seven suspects. Two murders. One killer is still playing a deadly game.

About “The Final Gambit”: To inherit billions, all Avery Kylie Grambs has to do is survive a few more weeks living in Hawthorne House. The paparazzi are dogging her every step. Financial pressures are building. Danger is a fact of life. And the only thing getting Avery through it all is the Hawthorne brothers. Her life is intertwined with theirs. She knows their secrets and they know her. But as the clock ticks down to the moment when Avery will become the richest teenager on the planet, trouble arrives in the form of a visitor who needs her help—and whose presence in Hawthorne House could change everything. It soon becomes clear that there is one last puzzle to solve, and Avery and the Hawthorne brothers are drawn into a dangerous game against an unknown and powerful player. Secrets upon secrets. Riddles upon riddles. In this game, there are hearts and lives at stake—and there is nothing more Hawthorne than winning.
