Peabody gets another $1M for Riverwalk

The City of Peabody received a $1 million boost for the construction of Peabody Riverwalk. This money comes from $16.8 million U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton “secured” for 14 sixth district community projects, according to a press release on Dec. 26.

“We are thrilled with the continued support from Congressman Moulton for our Riverwalk project. This funding is a big step forward and I’m very excited about taking the next steps to make this transformational project for our downtown become a reality,” Mayor Edward Bettencourt said.

The $1 million for the riverwalk is in addition to the $635,000 grant the city received in October with help from Moulton. The Peabody Riverwalk will be constructed “in a two-block centered area around the North River Canal,” the press release said.

“The project will improve resilience against climate change, create a park that enhances public access and vitality in an Economically Distressed Area and Environmental Justice Neighborhood, and provide the public with a new pedestrian corridor for alternative transportation,” the press release said.

Other communities benefiting from this new funding are Lynn, Salem, Beverly, Wakefield, Burlington, Reading and Gloucester.

“This funding is part of a massive government funding package, which the House of Representatives passed on Friday afternoon,” the press release said.

Lynn is receiving $1million for the Lynn Senior Center: $1 million for Lynn Community Health Center Pharmacy; $800,000 for the Central Avenue Roadway Safety Improvements Project and $1 million for the Haven Project’s Catalyst Housing Program.

“Everyday across the Sixth District – and across Massachusetts – our dedicated communities work on ways to improve life for everybody. The funding included in this year’s omnibus will further those efforts, supporting everything from better healthcare and senior services to economic mobility and environmental resilience,” said Congressman Moulton. “Although the vote was down to the wire, what matters is that this critical funding has been secured, and that over $16 million will be put to good use on the North Shore next year.”
