Crusaders shine bright at Twilight

At the Bob Glennon Twilight Invitational (small schools) meet Saturday, freshman Olivia Rowe placed sixth in the 2.1 mile. In the sophomore race, the Crusaders placed first with 27 points. Top performers were Julia Davis (third), Marianna Key (fourth), Adelaide Sweatman (11th) and Caroline Blatchford (16th). Mireille Cimenson, Noran Bonner and Kelsey Boe also ran well.

Beforehand, the Fenwick girls team collected its fifth consecutive victory, defeating Cardinal Spellman Tuesday, Oct. 10. Julia Davis won her fourth straight race. Marianna Kay (3rd), Olivia Rowe (4th), Caroline Blatchford (5th), Emily Elliott (6th) and Mireille Climenson (8th) rounded out the top runners for the Crusaders.

Peabody (5-2-4) came back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to salvage a tie against Billerica Saturday at home, its second 2-2 stalemate in as many games.

“[It was] probably our best complete game of the year,” coach Stan McKeen said.

Abou Kaba scored both goals off Luke Murray and Kacper Kowalczyk assists, while AJ Forte, Jaiden Fils-Aime, Yanni Pappas, and Aidan Pais all submitted strong showings, according to McKeen.

The Tanners’ next game is Thursday night at home against Marblehead (6:30).

In a “hard-fought game by both teams” according to Peabody coach Stan McKeen, his Tanners (5-2-3) tied Masco, 2-2 on the road Oct. 11.
Luke Murray scored on a direct kick, followed by Abou Kaba off an assist from Kacper Kowalczyk. McKeen added that Yanni Pappas, Fabio Goulart, Lucas Silva, and AJ Forte all played strong games.

Peabody 0

Despite Sophia Kassis racking up 27 saves – one on a penalty stroke in the fourth quarter – the Falcons of Danvers flew over Peabody on Thursday, Oct. 12.

“She was the player of the game, without a doubt,” Peabody coach Jillian Tobin said. “We are proud of our fire in this game overall.”
The Tanners are back in action Thursday at home against Revere (4).

With Thursday’s win, the Tanners (7-7) are eligible for the state qualifier to be played on Oct. 23. Peabody winners were Matt Ryder, Tristan Joyce, Mike Ryan, Cam Connolly, Nate Palhares, and Joe Keka.

Despite Peabody’s Nate Palhares winning his match, 7.5-1.5, the Tanners (6-4) were easily handled by Bishop Fenwick at home.

In sweeping set scores of 25-12, 25-15, and 25-19, sisters Abby Bettencourt (19 service points, 20 assists, 5 aces, 5 digs, 6 kills) and Lizzy (21 kills, 9 digs, 8 service points) led the way Friday night.

Kayla Landry (5 service points, 3 kills), Ava Ruffing (block), Sydney Lynch (7 service points, 7 digs) , Addison Merrill (3 service points, 2 kills, 2 digs, block), and Emma Lynch (6 digs, 3 service points, kill, assist) “all made huge contributions to the win,” according to coach Lisa Keene.

In a five-set back-and-forth match, the Tanners lost on the road Oct. 11 in set scores of 23-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22, and, ultimately, 15-17, Peabody (12-2) lost for just the second time this fall, snapping a 12-game win streak.

Abby Bettencourt impressed with 35 assists, 14 service points, eight digs, eight kills, three aces and two blocks. Lizzy Bettencourt had a monster game with 27 kills, 13 digs and three aces. Sophomore Sydney Lynch racked up 11 digs, nine service points and two aces. Junior Addison Merrill finished with 10 digs, three kills, three service points and one ace and senior captain Kayla Landry had a solid all-around effort with five service points, three blocks, three kills, three digs and one ace. Junior Arianna Goudreau (10 service points, 3 aces, dig), junior Emma Lynch (5 service points, 3 digs, 2 kills, 2 aces), junior Carly Chouinard (3 service points, 3 digs) and junior Ava Ruffing (kill) also helped the cause.

In set scores of 17-25, 25-19, 25-21, and 25-16, the Tanners (12-1) rattled off three consecutive sets to take care of Marblehead, 3-1 on Oct. 10 at home. In not-so-surprising news, Abby Bettencourt (16 kills, 30 assists, 10 dogs. 7 service points, 3 blocks, 2 aces) and her sister, Lizzy (21 kills, 13 digs, 6 service points, ace), led the way for Peabody. Chouinard (15 digs, 13 service points, 2 aces), Landry (9 service points, 6 digs, 4 kills, 4 blocks, 2 aces), Sydney Lynch (13 digs, 7 service points, ace) and Merrill (7 digs, 5 service points, 4 kills, ace, block) also had strong games.

St. Mary’s 1

In a hard-fought matchup at St. Mary’s, the Spartans fell to Fenwick, 3-1. Lorynes Suriel (12 kills, 9 digs, 40 assists, 14 service points) impressed for the hosts.
