The comeback kids of Lynnfield softball

The Lynnfield softball team improved to 3-4 this season with a 12-7 win against Malden Catholic, which has five wins in its own right.

The Pioneers trailed 4-0 early on Friday, but a five-run sixth inning highlighted the comeback.

Senior Abi Travers had RBI and two-run singles, senior Ava Marotta went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Sophia Brown went the distance for the win, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits and three walks to go with three strikeouts.

SOFTBALL

Lynnfield 21

East Boston 2

Lynnfield took full advantage of an East Boston team that was missing its pitcher on Monday, April 24. Morgan Hubbard had three singles and a sacrifice fly in addition to four RBI. Abi Travers and Lily Williams had two hits apiece for the Pioneers. Sophia Brown pitched five innings, striking out six while only giving up three hits.

Lynnfield 4

The Lynnfield softball team was bested by Pentucket 18-4 on Wednesday, April 19, dipping its record to 2-4.

Lauren Amico roped a two-run single, while Libby Considine and Celia Carbone tacked on RBI singles. Ava Gamache, Morgan Hubbard, and Abi Travers also had hits.

BASEBALL

Chelmsford 7

St. John’s Prep 6

Friday was a competitive one between St. John’s Prep and Chelmsford, but Chemsford’s six-run second inning was the difference-maker. Trailing 7-2 in the seventh, Prep rattled off four straight runs, but to no avail.

There was no shortage of hitting, however, as Prep recorded 13 hits. Cam LaGrassa (3 hits), Aidan Driscoll (2), Nate Marston (2), Will Shaheen (2), and Marco Zirpolo (2) all played well.

Prep, which committed two more errors than Chelmsford, dipped its record to 3-3.

Lynnfield 7

Triton 6

Lynnfield got it going early, allowing the Pioneers to fend off a late surge from Triton. As for how they did it, look no further than starting pitcher Rob Higdon and Owen Mullin in relief.

Higdon pitched a strong five innings and Mullin closed out the final two innings strong according to head coach John O’Brien. The Lynnfield offense racked up 13 hits, and was led by senior Alex Gentile (2 hits) and junior Anthony Grabau (2 hits).

The Pioneers improved their record to 4-1.

Mansfield 3
St. John’s Prep 2

The Mansfield Hornets stung the St. John’s Prep Eagles on Wednesday, April 19 in a narrow 3-2 matchup. Nate Marston and Jack Growney each recorded two hits for the Eagles, who had eight in total.

On the mound, Prep’s Jack Sarno allowed three hits and retired four batters across four innings. Henry Hebert relieved Sarno and struck out four in 3 2/3 innings.

BOYS LACROSSE

St. John’s Prep 16

Franklin 8

The Franklin Panthers are no joke – a team with an explosive offense and high-level talent. But on Saturday morning, they were no match for the St. John’s Prep lacrosse team, which won 16-8.

Prep raced out to a 9-4 halftime lead before withstanding a third quarter comeback bid from the Panthers. Offensively, the Eagles were led by Jimmy Ayers (4 goals, 2 assists), Matt Morrow (3 goals), and Jake Vana (2 goals, 3 assists) making his return from an injury.

Lucas Verrier (2 goals), Nick Schibli, Luke Kelly, Harlan Graber, Will Sawyer, and Cam McCarthy all scored. Chris Esposito won half of his faceoffs (13 for 26) while Gavin Kornitsky made 12 saves on 20 shots.

Sam Wilmot, Jack Weissenburger, and Ryan DeLuica all performed well on the defensive end.

BOYS TENNIS

Westborough 2

In a hard-fought matchup against Westborough, Prep just barely squeaked by with the win. The Eagles return to action against Marblehead on Thursday, and moved to 5-0 with the win.

GIRLS TENNIS

Lynnfield 5

Rockport 0

Lynnfield’s own Paige Martino (first singles) and Genna Gioioso (second singles) set the tone in Monday’s win. Both Martino and Gioioso won their respective matches 6-0, 6-0. Third singles Maddie Sieve won her match 6-1, 6-3. First doubles Leticia Marafon and Lily Alves also took home the win 6-1, 6-3.
