Peabody School Committee hopes to mandate the shoveling of sidewalks

Peabody School Committee members expressed concern over the safety of students who walk to and from school during the winter at a recent meeting.

“One of the items that myself, and several other police officers identified, was winter safety for our walking students,” Committee member Jon Swanson said. “Hopefully we are able to team up with the City Council and pass some type of ordinance that mandates that our sidewalks are shoveled by residents.”

Peabody Public Schools Superintendent Josh Vadala also updated the committee about the upcoming fiscal year 2025 budget presentation.

“I sent my first budget memo with all the asks that the school principals had put in,” Vadala said. “So we’re currently working with the mayor to get the city’s number, and we’ll work as a committee to find ways to reduce the overall budget number that we currently have.”
