To the editor:
I am writing this letter in support of Kim Baker Donahue for Lynnfield School Committee.
I’ve had the privilege of knowing Kim as a colleague and friend. I began my career in education as she was attending law school. We had many discussions about the way schools work, how children are taught, and the foster care system, because she was taking courses in juvenile law and special education law. Our conversations increased and we continued learning from each other when I became a school counselor and she worked to advocate for students who were part of the Department of Children and Families. These conversations always challenged me and made me a better educator.
Over the last 20 years of our almost 30-year friendship, which has continued to grow, our discussions have continued, especially as our children have entered elementary and middle school. I reside in a different state, which gives us the opportunity to compare what our children are learning and how different schools handle specific situations. Kim is always open to hearing my perspective of things as an educator/parent. She is able to express her views and have discussions, even if we do not agree. In the end, we always respect each other’s ideas and perspectives because she is very open and willing to hear what others have to say.
I have been able to use her experience in law and education to make me a better counselor, teacher, and educator throughout my career. I believe Kim Baker Donahue would be a great asset to the Lynnfield School Committee because she brings with her knowledge, experience, and an openness to listen and solve problems together with all those involved.
