Rotary Club to ‘get moving’ to end polio

The Rotary Club of Peabody is set to join Rotary International and Rotary District 7930 in their efforts to “Get Moving” to eradicate polio, offering a yoga class later this month.

The class is set for Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. at the Torigian Family YMCA. Rotary Peabody’s goal is to raise more than $500. There will be two ways to support the Rotary: to get moving at the yoga class, or to sponsor a Rotary team member who will be participating in the class.

Those who cannot attend the class but would like to support the Rotary are encouraged to support one of its team members online. On the site, they can choose a team member and donate directly until Feb. 3.

Yoga participants can choose from two levels depending upon their ability and preference: chair yoga or yoga flow.

Chair Yoga: a gentle yoga practice incorporating seated poses, standing poses with the chair used for support and relaxation techniques; great for beginners or those with limited mobility.

Yoga Flow: an all-levels class featuring breathwork, beginner-level Vinyasa yoga poses as well as a series of strength, balance, and flexibility poses.

Both classes will be offered simultaneously in separate spaces. Suggested donation to participate in either class is $10 to cover overhead.

Gentle Chair Yoga will be taught by Rotarian Carol Wallis, a 200-hour certified yoga teacher who specializes in chair yoga. She is currently teaching yoga classes for many of the local YMCA branches, including the Torigian Family YMCA, Demakes YMCA, Melrose YMCA, and Saugus YMCA.

Yoga Flow will be taught by Rotarian Jacqui Orphanos, a 200-hour Yoga International certified yoga teacher and Reiki II practitioner who specializes in Beginner Yoga Flow, Advanced Power Yoga, and Restorative Yoga. Jacqui is currently teaching Restorative Yoga at Centre Yoga in Peabody, Gentle Yoga at Re-Create Studio in Lynnfield, and Creative Flow Yoga at Slow River Studios in Topsfield.

The Rotary Club of Peabody gives tens of thousands of dollars in high school student scholarships, meals for those with food insecurity, the revitalization of Peabody playgrounds, education and literacy projects, and partnerships with other local organizations and Rotary clubs to make their community stronger.
