Council addresses late license renewals in first meeting of 2024

The City Council took largely procedural actions during a brief 20-minute meeting last week, its first of 2024, the first time the body has met with its new leadership and membership in place.

Councilors renewed a bevy of outstanding licenses that failed to submit paperwork to the city clerk’s office in time to be renewed before the end of 2023. City Clerk Allyson Danforth said 11 licenses remained outstanding beyond those renewed by councilors during the meeting, and Councilor-at-Large Tom Rossignol said the Legal Affairs Committee would address the late renewals during its next meeting.

In other business, councilors also voted unanimously at the request of Ward 5 Councilor David Gamache to have the Legal Affairs Committee address the legality of amending the city’s car-carrier ordinance to institute fines for dealerships that allow car carriers to park on public roadways. The city has fines in place for carriers that park and unload on public roadways, but Gamache said he wanted to institute a penalty for dealerships that fail to stop the practice.

The council will meet next on Jan. 25, at which time it will likely have a lengthier agenda.
