LTE: Thank you to all who supported the Peabody Rotary’s Walk for Veterans

To the editor:

On behalf of the Rotary Club of Peabody, we’d like to thank everyone who participated in and donated to Rotary’s Walk For Veterans and day of service. Your help is much appreciated!

The Rotary Club of Peabody held this walk and day of service in support of veterans and the Veterans Services Department of Peabody, led by Steve Patten. The department does a remarkable job assisting veterans. Among the services the department provides are the following: helping veterans with referrals for medical assistance, setting appointments and giving transportation to those appointments; assistance with the Veterans Administration; help with obtaining disability benefits for veterans; financial assistance for those veterans in need; help with employment assistance and unemployment benefits; informing all veterans of the benefits they’re entitled to receive. And every two years, Wiggins Auditorium at City Hall is packed with veterans for the Veterans Day breakfast and its very well put-together program by the Veterans Services Department. These are just a few of the services provided by the department.

But the Veterans Services Department has a limited budget. That’s why the Rotary Club of Peabody held the Walk For Veterans. We want to raise more money so Steve Patten and his staff can help veterans even more than they do now. So we ask that you consider making a donation, if you haven’t already done so. The link for donations is:  https://peabodyrotarytaste.com/virtual-happy-dollar/ . Please be sure to enter “Veterans Walk” in the message area.

Rotary’s motto is “Service Above Self”. The second part of the Walk for Veterans was “A day of service for those who served for us.” The Walk ended at Court House Plaza where Rotarians and many others cleaned up the area around the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. The monument had been erected in 1881 in memory of those from South Danvers (now Peabody) who fought and died in the Civil War.

Thank you very much.
