Remembering West Peabody’s Speedway

If you’re a history buff and love car racing, then the West Peabody Speedway Reunion is just the ticket.

The event will be held on Saturday April 15 at Smith Barn, 38 Felton St. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sponsored by the Peabody Historical Society and Museum, the event features racing historian Carl Silva of Gloucester, who will show his extensive collection of racecar posters from the West Peabody Speedway.

From 1947 to 1961, the West Peabody Speedway captivated audiences with stock car races, demolition derbies,  jalopy races and even buffalo and llama races.

The track was located between Lake and Pine Streets. The City of Peabody took the land in 1963 for the construction of the John F. Kennedy Junior High School. Today, the track outline can be seen adjacent to Covenant Christian Academy in Kennedy Fields Park.

Admission is free for members. The cost for non-members is $5 per person.

Race car trailers will not be available on site.

This is a cash-only event.
