Peabody baseball bests Saugus (ROUNDUP)

Peabody’s starting pitcher Cam Connolly overwhelmed Saugus’ offense throughout, throwing a complete game two-hitter while retiring nine batters to lead the Tanners to a 3-1 win.

The Sachems’ starting pitcher Cam Bernard also had an impressive performance (complete game, 3 hits, 5 strikeouts, 3 runs).

The difference in the game came in the third inning – that’s when Peabody’s Mike Pietro hit an RBI double, the eventual game-winning run.

BASEBALL

St. Mary’s 2

The Spartans had their opportunities, but left 10 men on base which proved to be the difference on Thursday, April 13.

Leading the way for St. Mary’s was Michal Demaino (2 hits) and Chris Marks (2-for-2). Spartans’ catcher Isaiah Weston had a strong performance behind the plate.

Fenwick pitcher Mike Geissler quieted the St. Mary’s bats, tossing nine strikeouts in five innings. The Spartans (3-2) look to bounce back Saturday afternoon against Pope Francis.

Xaverian 4

St John’s Prep’s Joe Williams retired nine batters while allowing just seven hits against a very skilled Xaverian group. Will Shaheen batted 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Yanni Andrikopoulos plated two. Nick Lembo and Marco Zirpoli both tripled, and the Eagles picked up yet another win in the rivalry matchup.

SOFTBALL

It was another no-hitter for Abby Bettencourt, who finished the game with 10 strikeouts and two walks while going 4-for-4 at the plate.

The Tanners flexed their offensive muscles with Isabel Bettencourt (2 RBI), Elizabeth Bettencourt (3 RBI), and Logan Lomasney (2 RBI) all hitting home runs. Kiley Doolin brought in three runs to help the Tanners secure the win.

BOYS LACROSSE

Brunswick 17
St. John’s Prep 10

The St. John’s Prep Eagles (4-1) were defeated by the Brunswick Bruins (6-2) Saturday afternoon by a score of 17-10. The Eagles failed to compete with the Bruins for ground balls, and struggled to handle the intensity and tempo of Brunswick.

Despite the loss, positives were taken away. Jimmy Ayers scored a hat-trick alongside an assist, Matt Morrow and Lucas Verrier each potted two goals, and Ryan DeLuica, Luke Kelly, and Drew Bossi all scored.

Prep goalie Gavin Kornitsky made 10 saves on 27 shots.

Masconomet 6

The Peabody boys lacrosse team put on a show on Saturday, defeating Masconomet 7-6 to continue its perfect start (4-0).

Ashton Sousa scored four times, while Matt Bettencourt potted two alongside four assists. The Tanners aim for 5-0 at 10 a.m. on Monday against Marblehead.

Marblehead 8

The Tanners went on the road and got the victory over the Magicians. Peabody led 8-2 at the half and maintained its six-goal lead until the final horn. Lucy Wales led the Magicians with three goals, while goalkeeper Addie Lydon recorded seven saves for Marblehead.

Despite Ava Nason (3 goals, 1 assist), Kasey Litwin (2 goals), Vanessa Hall (1 goal, 1 assist), and Jill Kirby (1 goal) all submitting strong performances, the Fenwick girls lacrosse team took care of the Spartans on Wednesday, April 12.

Despite Peabody’s Caitlin Snow making seven key saves between the pipes, Reading ran away with a 17-5 win on Tuesday, April 11.

There was no shortage of offense for Logan Lomasney, who ripped three goals to go with an assist. Madi Barrett scored a goal and dished out an assist in the loss.

St. Mary’s head coach Steve McGuirk picked up his first win as the Spartans bested Fenwick 4-0 on Tuesday, April 11. Mark Wood (6-1, 6-0), Thomas Shea (6-1, 6-3), and the combinations of Griffin L’Italien-Christopher Lutchman (6-1, 6-2), and Daniel Pimentel-Brendan Zollo (6-0, 6-0) were Tuesday’s winners.

In a close road match for the Crusaders, Madelyn Leary’s comeback was the difference-maker. Leary, playing second singles, came back after dropping the first set to win 3-6, 5-4, 6-2.

The Crusaders’ next match is April 24 when they travel to face Cardinal Spellman.

VOLLEYBALL

St. John’s Prep 3

Central Catholic 0

The Eagles showed out, winning all three sets in another convincing win. The Prep has won its last three volleyball matches in straight sets. Under the direction of Kara Brown, the Eagles are truly a dominant force that doesn’t look to be stopping any time soon.

TRACK AND FIELD

At a Cawley Stadium event, the St. John’s Prep track and field team put on a great show. Highlights included Anthony Ragosa snagging a personal record in shot put (45’2) and Jack Angelopoulos breaking 40’ in triple jump.

Alex Bajoras threw a 43’1 in shot put – a new personal record for him – and Jeff Groth won the 200m with a time of 23.1. Will Pechinsky also showed out, recording a 2:01 in the 800m.
