Lynnfield baseball knows how to come from behind (ROUNDUP)

Rob Higdon allowed just five hits and three runs in five innings, while Dan Dorman played well in relief to help Lynnfield defeat Belmont 5-3 at home on Saturday.

Dorman recorded a sac-fly in the first inning to put the Pioneers ahead 1-0, but Belmont stormed back to jump ahead 3-1.

But from there, four runs in the fourth inning did the trick for Lynnfield. Henry Caulfield roped a two-RBI double while Devin Bolger and Cam Marengi each hit RBI singles – talk about “timely hitting” as said by head coach John O’Brien.

“It was nice to answer after being down 3-1,” O’Brien said. “The kids played well. Credit to the kids.”

On top of his players, O’Brien also credited his assistant coaches Ben Kendrew, Mike O’Brien, Darren Damiani, Tom Englehart, and Brent Ashley for getting them prepared.

SOFTBALL

It was a tough day for the Pioneers as they struggled for offense against an unyielding Amesbury pitcher who only allowed two hits. Morgan Hubbard (double) and Lauren Amico (single) were the lone hits for Lynnfield.

Lynnfield 14
Ipswich 2

The run insurance was great, but it’s not like Lynnfield’s Sophia Brown necessarily needed it against Ipswich. The pitcher tossed six innings, allowing zero earned runs, seven hits, and just one walk to go with her five strikeouts.

Offensively, freshman Lily Williams recorded her first three career hits. Not only that, the hits drove in four runs. Ava Gamache connected on a three-run bomb and two singles, while Catie Kampersal also hit a two-run shot to go with an RBI single.

Lynnfield upped its record to 2-2 (1-2 in Cape Ann League).

The St. John’s Prep Eagles (4-1) were defeated by the Brunswick Bruins (6-2) Saturday afternoon by a score of 17-10. The Eagles failed to compete with the Bruins for ground balls, and struggled to handle the intensity and tempo of Brunswick.

Despite the loss, positives were taken away. Jimmy Ayers scored a hat-trick alongside an assist, Matt Morrow and Lucas Verrier each potted two goals, and Ryan DeLuica, Luke Kelly, and Drew Bossi all scored.

Prep goalie Gavin Kornitsky made 10 saves on 27 shots.

“We did not start great, but we ended up playing a really good game all around,” Lamusta said. “We had a tough game against Pentucket yesterday, so it was nice to see this group bounce back so well.”

Despite the 14-6 final, Kelan Cardinal (1 goal, 2 assists) and Jack Calicham (3 assists) each stayed hot. Drew Damiani (2), Will Norton (2), and Owen Considine (1) all found twine, and Ben Pimentel played well with 20 saves for the Pioneers.
