Boys tennis team clips Newburyport

Coming off its 18-2 season in which the Lynnfield boys tennis won the Cape Ann League, the Pioneers are off to a good start in 2023, defeating Newburyport 5-0 on Thursday, April 8. Shea McCarthy, Dan Levin, and Avi Shrivstara each won in singles, giving up just one set between the three of them.

In doubles play, the Pioneers picked up two more wins to improve to 1-1 on the season.

GIRLS TENNIS

The Pioneers put together a dominant performance en route to their first win of the season Thursday, April 8. Winners for Lynnfield were Paige Martino (first singles, 6-0, 6-2); Genna Gioioso (second singles, 6-2, 6-0); Maddie Sieve (third singles, 3-6, 6-1, 10-6); Leticia Marafon-Ella Hayman (first doubles, 6-0, 6-1) and Ciara Long-Lily Alves (second doubles, 6-0, 6-0).

There’s no shame in losing to the defending Division 2 state champions as the Lynnfield girls tennis team was bested by Newburyport in its season-opener.

Maddie Sieve won her singles match (6-2, 6-3) for Lynnfield’s lone victory. The Lady Pioneers look for their first win of the season Monday when they host Triton.

BASEBALL

Haverhill 5

Lynnfield head coach John O’Brien was more than pleased with his team’s 12-5 victory against Haverhill on Monday, just two days after the Pioneers bested Lynn Classical on Saturday.

“Haverhill is a good team, so this was a nice showing and a good win,” O’Brien said. “We pitched well, had a balanced offensive attack, and played really good defense, which is great.”

Dave Tracy threw the first four innings for the Pioneers in the win and sophomore Maddox Iovinelli picked up a three-inning save. Tyler Adamo (2 hits and 2 RBI) and Alex Gentile (2 hits) led the way for the Lynnfield offense. The Pioneers (2-0) will take on Belmont Saturday morning.

St. John’s Prep 7
Walpole 3

William Shaheen recorded two hits and two RBI, Marco Zirpolo collected two RBI, Nate Marston walked twice, and the St. John’s Prep baseball team cruised to a 7-3 victory against Walpole at Frates Field on Saturday.

Prep’s Joe Williams earned the win on the mound, pitching six innings and retiring six batters.

SOFTBALL

Triton 11
Lynnfield 1

Lynnfield junior third baseman Ava Gamache had a strong performance at the plate (2-3) and is now 7-11 on the season. Pioneers sophomore Kaila George got on base and scored the lone run. Morgan Hubbard and Lauren Amico also had one hit apiece for Lynnfield.

The Lynnfield softball team may have been doubled up by a tough Newburyport team on Thursday, but there weren’t plenty of positives to take away.

Junior Ava Gamache went 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot, registering two runs and an RBI, while sophomore Morgan Hubbard and senior Ava Marotta each connected for two hits apiece.

The Pioneers fell to 1-1 on the season (0-1 in the Cape Ann League).

BOYS LACROSSE

St. John’s Prep 12

Acton Boxborough 8

The St. John’s Prep lacrosse team upped its record to 2-0 Saturday afternoon with a hard-fought, 12-8 win against Acton Boxborough at home. Jimmy Ayers scored the final four goals for the Eagles to finish with six and two helpers.

Chris Esposito played well in the face off category (18 for 22), helping the Eagles maintain possession throughout the game. Nick Schibli and Greyson Ambrosh were effective on defense, while Gavin Kornitsky made 11 saves on 19 shots for Prep.

Luke Kelly, Rowan Mondello, Nate Jones, Esposito, Matt Morrow, Cam McCarthy, and Noah Brown all found twine.

Lynnfield 17
North Reading 4

Jack Calichman did, well, Calichman things in Lynnfield’s 17-4 victory against North Reading on Wednesday, April 5. The righty scored six goals and dished out eight assists.

Kelan Cardinal continued his strong start to the season with another four goals, while Owen Considine registered a hat-trick.

Seven takeaways and 32 ground balls later, and that was your ballgame.
