City announces 2023 Election Calendar

Peabody City Clerk Allyson Danforth has released the 2023 election calendar for the preliminary and final elections.

The preliminary election will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 12. The city’s biennial election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Nomination papers will be available starting Monday, March 6. Candidates must file a signed statement containing their name, address, and the office to which they are a candidate. Nomination forms will be issued only to candidates or their agents, who have been appointed in writing. 

Each candidate is given five nomination papers. The minimum required number of certified signatures for candidates for all offices to appear on the ballot is 50. Nomination papers are to be notarized by a non-family member only.

A candidate is entitled to a list of persons book and the voting list.

Any nomination paper circulated to voters for signatures must first be filled out in full, signed by the candidate, and notarized prior to circulation.

All candidates who take out nomination papers should begin the process of campaign finance. Rules and forms on campaign finance are available in the City Clerk’s office or can accessed online at the Office of Campaign and Political Finance.

2023 Election Calendar

Friday, July 21 (5 p.m.): Last day and hour for taking out nomination papers.

Tuesday, July 25 (5 p.m.): Last day and hour for filing all nomination papers and petitions with the Board of Registrars of Voters for certification of signatures.

Registrars need not certify more names than the required amount plus 20 percent.

Tuesday, Aug. 8 (5 p.m.): Last day and hour for filing certified nomination papers by the Board of Registrars with the City Clerk. 

Wednesday, Aug. 9: The list of names and addresses of candidates will be posted.

Thursday, Aug. 10 (5 p.m.): Last day and hour for filing withdrawals or objections to nomination papers.

Thursday, Aug. 10 (5:15 p.m.): Drawing for ballot positions on Preliminary Ballot in City Council chambers. City Clerk/Board of Registrars will draw for ballot positions. Candidates and/or representatives may be present.

Friday, Sept. 1 (5 p.m.): Last day and hour to register voters for the preliminary election. 

Tuesday, Sept. 5: Last day to post preliminary warrant

Tuesday, Sept. 5 (5 p.m.): Last day and hour to apply for a vote by mail ballot.

Monday, Sept. 11 (noon): Last day to apply for an in-person absentee ballot.

Tuesday, Sept. 12: Preliminary election

Monday, Sept. 18 (5 p.m.): Last day and hour to file for a recount and last day and hour for filing withdrawals or objections to nomination papers and for filing written acceptances by write-in or sticker candidates.

Monday, Sept. 18 (5:15 p.m.): Drawing for ballot positions in City Council chambers. City Clerk/Board of Registrars will draw for ballot positions. Candidates and/or representatives may be present.

Friday, Oct. 27 (5 p.m.): Last day and hour to register voters for the city election.

Tuesday, Oct. 31: Last day to post election warrant and last day and hour to apply for a vote by mail ballot.

Monday, Nov. 6 (noon): Last day and hour to apply for an in-person absentee ballot.

Tuesday, Nov. 7: City biennial election

Friday, Nov. 17 (5 p.m.): Last day and hour to file for a recount.
