Lynnfield Recreation has announced it will be offering two exciting new weekend programs at the new Huckleberry Hill School gymnasium – futsal and pickleball.
“Today is a huge day for Lynnfield Rec with the opening of the new Huckleberry Hill Gym we are now able to provide indoor Rec programming,” said Rec Chair Rich Sjoberg. “This is only the beginning of the next stages of great things to be offered by Lynnfield Rec.”
A new Youth Futsal League is planned for the winter. The season will include a three-weekend practice/preseason starting in December with eight weeks of season play and playoffs from January through March. Registration for the program begins at the end of this week.

The league features plenty of fast-paced 5v5 small-sided indoor games designed to develop footwork skills, touches on the ball, quick decision-making, movement off the ball and team play. Plenty of scoring is expected, making the game fun to play and exciting to watch.
Games consist of two 24-minute halves. Teams of eight to nine players will be coached by volunteer coaches.
G2 (grade 2) games will be played on Saturdays between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. G4 (grade 4) games will be played on Sundays between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. G6 (grade 6) games will be played on Sundays between 12 and 4 p.m. G8 (grade 8) games will be played on Sundays between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.
There will also be an opportunity for high school level play between 6:30 and 9 p.m. (TBD).
A new pickleball league is also in the works for Saturdays from 8-11 a.m. Sjoberg said while the details have yet to be finalized, the program will include lessons and games.
“When we looked at the space and the times that are available due to basketball, we looked at what we could do on weekends when the space isn’t being used for basketball. We wanted to touch all ages right up through high school. Pickleball is all the rage right now and between futsal and pickleball, Director Julie Mallett has really worked hard to put these programs together that we think will appeal to all ages.
“Now we are just looking to line up monitors to make sure the gym rules are being adhered to. There will be plenty of adult supervision between coaches and the custodian, so all that’s left is to hire some people to make sure the gym is being properly used.”
