LYNNFIELD – The School Committee would like to appoint a new superintendent of schools by next Feb. 1, thereby giving the selected candidate sufficient notice to his employer – often required in a contract – of his/her intent.

Frustrated by what he perceived as a lack of meaningful change to help people hurting by the recession, Michael Day said he decided to do something about it by announcing his plans last year to run for the state senate seat vacated by longtime Republican Sen. Richard Tisei.

A Democrat from Stoneham, Day is a practicing attorney for the Boston-based firm Mintz, Levin, specializing in small business and domestic violence. It was through daily interaction with his clients that Day heard and saw how much the economic downtown has affected people.

ArtSmart workshops start Aug. 2

LYNNFIELD – The Lynnfield Cultural Council is offering ArtSmart workshops for kids at the Meeting House.

Beginning Aug. 2, these arts and culture workshops for children in grades 4-8 will be run by Kendall Inglese of the council. ArtSmart themes vary each session. Participants may pick one workshop or more depending on interest in the subject matter.

Focus groups meet to discuss hiring new McCarthy principal

PEABODY – Applicants for the principal’s job at the McCarthy Elementary School have until Aug. 5 to apply.

The job, vacated by Amy Sullivan earlier this month, was posted July 22 on the Peabody Public Schools Web site and in various media outlets. Sullivan, after six years in Peabody, is leaving the district for a principal post at an early education center in Newburyport. She moved to the Clipper City with her family in January.
