Posted in

PEABODY -- For the first time in generations, students at the city’s elementary schools will be on the same page when it comes to learning to read. Literally.

Principals and teachers have been preparing through the summer months for implementation of the new “Journeys” literacy reading program, a program developed by a textbook publisher after extensive research into how children learn to read.

One focal point of the new program is to make it easier for parents to be involved in teaching their children to read.

Kevin Franey, Jr. grew up on Ellis St. in Peabody, off the 10th hole at the Meadow at Peabody Golf Club. That, no doubt, was his orientation to the game.

The 20-year-old is now a junior at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C., located in the middle of the state, 30 minutes from Fayetteville, “in the middle of nowhere,” Franey said.

The Tobacco Road Country Club in Sanford is another 30-minute drive and it’s a tough track, a Top Ten rated club on the U.S. Golf Map.

Phase-in plan for Meadow Walk discussed

Meadow Walk, an ambitious project to transform part of the Colonial golf course property into a village of commercial and residential buildings while retaining a vast expanse of open space may soon be back on track.
Officials with National Development presented selectmen with a plan that would to allow the project to be constructed in phases, a concession to the challenges of undertaking a major development project in a recession.
Selectmen and Town Administrator William Gustus will now negotiate the details of a phased-development construction timetable.
